Everyone in this online world password is like a passport,
so are you using that valuable password safely ?
Some tricks to keep your password safe for many years:
Firstly it should not be understood to everyone.
Password have to remembered easily like sudoko puzzle to you only,at that time only you can transfer any thing in this online world.
If you are giving password your name its not a secret word.so you have to give it some symbols, numbers n digits so that no one guess that rite...you can alse give letters in uppercase n lowercase, its much better..
giving nicknames, family names as your password its not safe ..
As from above lines you can set your password like this..
for example your name is anjali then write a sentence as "My Name is Anjali.I Beleive God" and you can set your password with choosing second letters of each eord in that sentence is better.(yasnIEO@567)
Things to be avoided:
Giving passwords to others on phone is not good.
Sending your password through emails,etc.,
Don't use your loginid as your password.
Don't use previously used passwords.
While entering your password login id in any browser you will get a popup Remember Password/Save my Password so avoid this.
Don't use same passwords for all login ids.
Some more important things to be kept in mind :
Update your password for every time or for some time span.
If you are typing your password by seeing at keyboard and entering each letter each time anyone beside you can easily see at your password.so it is necessary to set your password which is easily typed on keyboard.
Is your password safe ?

40+ Ways To Access Your Computer Remotely
admin,There are lots of reasons why you’d want to access your PC remotely, and luckily there are also plenty of ways to do so. Crossloop is one of the simplest (it’s also free), but for those willing to venture further, you’ve got lots of options.
Excuse us while we get technical for a second. This list is divided into four main sections: VNC (Virtual Network Computing), NX, remote desktop and cross-protocol. If those terms mean nothing to you, you might want to skip to the “other” section for the most straightforward applications. That said, let’s begin.VNC

- Ajax VNC - Clientless VNC solution in the web’s favorite programming language.
- Apple Remote Desktop - Apple’s jumped on the remote desktop bandwagon with this great VNC server built right into OS X.
- Chicken of the VNC - One of the most popular VNC clients for OS X under the GPL.
- DirectVNC - UNIX client using the framebuffer device via DirectFB.
- FVNC - Great VNC client written in Flash. That’s right, Flash.
- MetaVNC - This unique client/server package merges the host and remote desktops together into one Windows or Linux desktop.
- .NET VNC Viewer - C# viewer that works with Windows and Windows Mobile/CE devices.
- PowerVNC - Java-based client with support for SSH and SFTP.
- RealVNC - Server/client from the original VNC developers.
- sVNC - The perfect tool for offering remote assistance to Mac users, since there’s barely any configuring required.
- SymVNC - Symbian phone client for connecting to your PC.
- TightVNC - Popular VNC server/client with nice Java applet.
- TurboVNC - TightVNC spinoff with great support for 3D apps.
- UltraVNC - Wildly popular client/server app with file transfer, video drivers, chat, and much more.
- Vine Server - OS X server with clipboard sharing, port changing, and a universal binary.
- VncViewer for 8086 - Got an old IBM running FreeDOS or DOS? Put it to work with this VNC client.
- VNCViewer for PocketPC - Client for, you guessed it, PocketPC users.
- x11vnc - Unlike most other VNC servers for UNIX and Linux, this server lets you share your current desktop session (instead of a separate session).
NX

- FreeNX - Open source server using the libraries from NoMachine.
- NoMachine NX Client - Free client to connect to NX machines.
- NoMachine NX Free Edition - NX server for UNIX/Linux.
- NoMachine NX Enterprise Desktop - Server that includes everything that the free edition has, but with unlimited users (unlike the free version’s two).
- NoMachine NX Small Business Server - NX server targeting small businesses.
- NoMachine NX Enterprise Server - NX Server with unlimited users and unlimited connections.
- NoMachine NX Advanced Server Subscription - Everything that the Enterprise server has, plus multi-node capabilities.
Remote Desktop Protocol

- CoRD - Remote desktop client for Mac OS X users.
- grdestkop - Gnome wrapper for the rdesktop application.
- krdesktop - rdesktop frontend written in KDE.
- properJavaRDP - Cross-platform Java client based on rdesktop.
- rdesktop - Extremely powerful command-line client for UNIX/Linux.
- Remote Desktop - Microsoft’s official server, for XP Pro and Vista.
- xrdp - Serves an X window session to incoming Windows clients.
Cross-Protocol

- Connection Manager - VNC, RDP, and Telnet manager for UNIX/Linux distros.
- KDE Desktop Sharing - The official KDE VNC server package.
- KDE Remote Desktop Connection - The official KDE client for RDP and VNC.
- Kurd - Great rdesktop/vncviewer frontend for KDE.
- mRemote - Manage VNC and RDP connections on Windows with this handy app.
- RDPMan - A little utility to manage RDP, VNC, and Telnet connections for Windows.
Other

- CrossLoop - Easy-to-use remote access utility with file sharing and a multilingual interface.
- GoToMyPC - Extremely popular remote access program for ~$25/month.
- LogMeIn - Remote access app with a free and a pro ($12.95/month) version with file transfer, remote printing, and more.
- Unyte - Nice remote desktop server with a Java applet viewer and IM integration.
XML for dummies
admin,
XML lets developers capture, manipulate and exchange virtually any kind of document or data, without loss of integrity. Because XML lets you create common formats for sharing information between devices and platforms—such as mobile phones, Web browsers and company data stores—many experts have begun calling it the “lingua franca,” or universal language of the Digital Age. Developers, especially developers for the Web and intranets, can’t afford to be XML illiterate. But that powerful markup language has a lot of rules and can be a bit tricky to master. And that’s where this book comes in.
XML For Dummies offers you a fast, fun, and easy way to become XML literate. With a minimum of technobabble and tons of sample applications and case studies, the authors get you on track with XML and all its special features.

Have you ever been assigned a project and realized that you had no idea how you were going to accomplish it? Many developers have experienced this feeling when asked to interface their code with a database. With a few exceptions, most developers were busy learning Lisp, linked lists, and big-O notation during their formal education instead of learning the fundamentals of relationship database management systems. When the time comes to interface their code with a database, they turn to a book like the one you are holding.
Whatever the situation, interfacing an application to a database is one of the most fundamental tasks a developer is required to perform. This book is designed for developers who either have a pressing task ahead of them or who are curious about how to read database information into their application.
The primary goal of this book is to provide a comprehensive approach to writing code from a Java application to a MySQL database using the industry standard: JDBC. As you will see later in this Introduction, the chapter titles indicate what area of database connectivity and manipulation they cover. The chapters are ordered to reflect the JDBC specification, but we arent here to simply describe the specification.

The complete Feng Shui Collection
admin,Feng Shui is an ancient art of placement to bring balance and harmony to a physical space. The loose translation of Feng Shui is wind and water. Feng represents the wind that carries the chi (energy) throughout a space. Shui is the water that meanders underneath the earth transporting chi.
This package included 7most practical and popular e-book for Feng Shui:
1> A Quick Guide to the Five Elements
2> Feng Shui Secrets Revealed
3> How To Use Feng Shui To Improve Business & Office
4> How To Use Feng Shui To Attract Love
5> How To Use Feng Shui To Attract Wealth
6> The Top 10 Feng Shui Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
7> Wind Chimes & Water Fountains: Favorite Feng Shui Objects and How to Use Them
Chi is the invisible energy that surrounds us. To most people this energy cannot be felt, seen, or heard but it influences all living things. Chi should flow effortlessly around physical structures to bring balance and harmony. Feng Shui was invented, thousands of years ago to ensure the flow of chi would bring positive vibrations not negative ones that could create discord and chaos.
Feng Shui has been around for thousand of years but only in the past twenty years has North America really taken notice of this ancient art of placement. Professor Lin Yun pioneered the Feng Shui movement in the West. He teaches Black Hat Sect Feng Shui.
Its main objective is to align your physical space with your personal life goals. Our homes are a reflection of our life. Feng Shui’s purpose is to change the physicalspace, to allow the individual to reach their goals.

Ozone hole grows in 2008
admin,The hole is a thinning area in the ozone layer over Antarctica and the size of the hole varies every year depending on weather conditions.
This year, the size of the thinned area reached about 27 million square kilometers (10.4 million square miles), compared to 25 million square kilometers (9.65 million square miles) in 2007.
In 2006, the hole was a record 29 million square kilometers (11.2 million square miles), larger than North America, the ESA said.
The ESA announced its results based on information from German and Dutch researchers who analyzed satellite data.
Depletion of ozone is caused by extreme cold temperatures at high altitude and the presence of ozone-destroying gases, such as chlorine and bromine, in the atmosphere, the ESA said.
Those gases originate from man-made products like chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, which were phased out under a global agreement two decades ago but continue to linger in the atmosphere.
Ozone is a protective atmospheric layer found at an altitude of about 25 kilometers (15.5 miles).

Lightest and Thinnest Laptops in Indian Market
admin,Zero size is in; it seems with the reduction in size of every consumer device. Miniaturization is the key.
With the trend of getting slimmer, mean machines are shedding their flab. The trend was initiated by Apple MacBook Air, a product that garnered accolades from market and consumers. The product started a new segment in laptop category and wooed vendors to jump into the new yet more appealing market segment.
The article will list few of the thinnest and light weight laptops in the market:
1. Apple MacBook Air: Award winning product designed by Apple weighing just 1.36kgs, made a stunning entry into laptop segment. The laptop was launched earlier this year with 0.16-0.76” statistics. The thinness of the laptop was not a bottleneck for the performance as it was supporting features that can settle with the appetite of a designer user who wants style with performance.
Integrated with 13.3” LED backlit screen, MacBook Air was supported on by 1.6GHz or 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, with 4 MB on-chip shared L2 cache and 800MHz FSB. The notebook offers 2GB RAM and 80GB hard drive. Additionally, the laptop sports a single USB port, an audio out port and a micro-DVI port, and no modem. The device enticed users as was on of its kind at the launch time, but cost was the biggest limiting factor.
2. Lenovo ThinkPad X300: Closely following the MacBook Air is the product launched by the Chinese vendor Lenovo. To compete in the thin segment, Lenovo launched ThinkPad X300 laptop weighing 1.32kgs and has measurements 0.73” to 0.92”. Supports 13.3” LED backlit screen with full-size keyboard and is powered by Intel’s Core 2 Duo SL7100 LV low-voltage chip, and comes with 1GB RAM and 64GB SSD. Symbian mobile phones evolve - the Nokia N96 and 5800 Xpress
admin,77 million Symbian mobile phones were sold in 2007. That figure should be vastly increased over the next few months, as two phones will be taking it to new heights: the Nokia 5800 Xpress, and the mind-blowing Nokia N96.
Nokia and Symbian - long-time bedfellows
In truth, Nokia have a long history of using Symbian in their mobile phones, going all the way back, in fact, to their first camera phone, the 7650 (a huge beastie of a thing it was, too!). Some of the most powerful Nokia mobile phones ever made have run on Symbian, quite often using the patented Series 60 interface. In fact, it's fair to say that Series 60 is the most important version of Symbian, since it's the one that powers Nokia's top of the range mobile phones: the prestigious, world-renowned Nseries. To this day, Nseries mobile phones have a reputation for being world-beaters, including probably the most well-known of them all, the N95.
Well, now, the Nokia N95 has evolved into a new form: the sleek, smart Nokia N96.
Nokia N96 - the ultimate Nseries phone
The Nokia N96 really is the next evolution of the N95, since you get the same high-end feature-set (but with loads more bits added on), but in a sleek new body. In fact, the body of the Nokia N96 is reminiscent of another one of the earlier Nseries mobile phones: the N81. The similarities are striking, so much so that you could put down the Nokia N96 and N81 next to each other, and not tell which one's which. Not that that's a bad thing, since the N81 looked nice, and so does the Nokia N96. Certainly one of the prettier mobile phones on the market, and the Nokia N96 backs all that up with raw power. A 5 megapixel camera... GPS... HSDPA... 16GB of memory... and the big feature, multimedia. You see, the Nokia N96 is the king of mobile phones when it comes to media, especially video. It even includes BBC iPlayer (can't say that about many mobile phones!), and a little kickstand-type thing, to keep the Nokia N96 upright while you're watching videos!
Nokia 5800 Xpress - the future of Symbian?
Meanwhile, another offshoot of Symbian has appeared on mobile phones. Well... on one mobile phone so far, the Nokia 5800 Xpress. It's important for 1 reason: it's made for touchscreen mobile phones, which is exactly what the Nokia 5800 is. Ok, granted, the Nokia 5800 Xpress might not be their first touchscreen phone, but it IS their best, with 3 megapixel camera, HSDPA, GPS and that all important touchscreen, with the brand new Symbian interface, not seen on any previous mobile phones. It's fair to say Symbian is alive and well, and evolving still. With the Nokia N96 this Christmas, and the Nokia 5800 Xpress all set to wow us in the first months of next year, Symbian mobile phones are definitely on the up and up!
Windows Error Fix:Stop Error “Stop 0×24 - NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM” with BSOD
admin,This BSOD 0×24 is called as “NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM” and this error normally occurs in Windows Vista or in Windows XP computer systems due to hard disk drive problem's. This Windows stop error indicates a problem occurred in ntfs.sys, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS drives. Corruption in the NTFS file system or bad blocks (sectors) on the hard disk drive can induce this particular stop error. Corrupted SCSI and IDE drivers can also adversely affect the system's ability to read and write to disk, thus causing this stop error.
Another possible cause of this “NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM” stop error is the depletion of nonpaged pool memory. If the nonpaged pool memory is completely depleted, this error can stop the system. However, during the indexing process, if the amount of available nonpaged pool memory is very low, another kernel-mode driver requiring nonpaged pool memory can also trigger this stop error in Windows based computer systems.
To resolve a disk corruption problem:
Check Event Viewer for error messages from SCSI and FASTFAT (System Log) or Autochk (Application Log) that might help pinpoint the device or driver that is causing the error. Try disabling any virus scanners, backup programs, or disk defragmenter tools that continually monitor the Windows based computer system. You should also run hardware diagnostics supplied by the system manufacturer. For details on these procedures, see the owner's manual for your computer. Run Chkdsk /f /r to detect and resolve any file system structural corruption. You must restart the system before the disk scan begins on a system partition. The steps for this is given:
- Insert and boot from your Windows Vista DVD or XP CD
- Select the Repair option from the opened menu.
- Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair. Typically this will be #1
- Enter in the administrator password when requested
- Now type chkdsk /r
- After that command is completed restart your system and check. if the issue still exist then format and reinstall the operating system.
To resolve a nonpaged pool memory depletion problem:
Either add new physical memory to the Windows based computer (thus increasing the quantity of nonpaged pool memory available to the kernel), or reduce the number of files on the Services for Macintosh (SFM) volume.
Fix a Non Booting Windows Vista Installation
admin,NOTE: Be sure to unplug all un-necessary USB devices (everything except mouse/keyboard) before attempting any of these steps, as crazy as it sounds many people can not get the Windows Vista install CD to recognize their Windows install to repair it unless USB devices are unplugged. Don’t ask me why. Now you’ve unplugged them haven’t you? You better have. Great, lets go.
Go ahead and get out that Windows Vista Boot disk that you have, insert it into your CD drive and then turn on your computer. Hold down “F12″ while booting to open up your “Boot To” menu prompt. Select “CD-ROM” and then continue by pressing enter. Now depending on several random factors Windows Vista could take almost a full 10 minutes to get to the point where it shows its install screen. But seeing as tutorials work outside the constraints of time, let’s just assume you are already there. First you will see a screen that has some time/region info on it, go ahead and click the next button. Now instead of clicking the big shiny button in the middle, go ahead and click down at the bottom left hand side that says, “Repair your computer”. Now you should see an old Windows 95 stylistic menu and a list of all the operating systems the install disk detects. If your list is empty, try waiting a few moments or removing all but your master hard-drive. And if that fails, just go ahead and hit next anyway. Now highlight your Windows Vista OS and click Next. Now it should start up automatic recovery at this point and most problems can be fixed through this method. But if startup recovery cannot fix the problem go ahead and click on the “Command Prompt” option from the System Recovery Options.
Trick: If you know what your problem is, but just can’t get into an explorer view to delete the files or change a setting, such as compressing your bootmgr ;), at the command prompt just type in “notepad” without prompts and then select File>Open and now you will be in a simple explorer and can make changes as necessary. Back to the original solutions.
Now that you are in the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing enter after each line.
1. bootrec /fixmbr
2. bootrec /rebuildbcd
3. bootrec /fixboot
4. bootrec /scanos
5. chkdsk /r
Windows Error Fix:Windows Installer Appears Every Time Start an Application
admin,Unfortunately, Windows Installer is fraught with bugs, one of which is its tendency to appear every time you start applications like Microsoft Office (or some other third party software programs) and begin a re-installation or reconfiguration process. All you'll see is the "Please Wait" screen, followed by a progress bar. The problem is related to the This feature will be installed when required option (sometimes called "Install on Demand"), used when installing some applications. In essence, Windows Installer starts to install a "feature" when it is needed, even though it may be already installed.
Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, Microsoft will not acknowledge that there is a serious flaw in their installer software. Here are the solutions we've come up with so far:
Solution 1:
- Reinstall the application in question, and don't choose the This feature will be installed when required for any of the optional components.
However, this may not solve the problem (which is the very bug we're talking about). We're currently looking for a way to fix the problem properly, but in the mean time, here's how to turn off the "feature:"
Solution 2
- Open the Group Policy Editor by selecting Run from the Start Menu, and typing gpedit.msc. (If the file is missing, run mmc.exe instead. Then, select Add/Remove Snap-in from the Console menu, click Add, and double-click Group Policy. Click Finish, then Close, then Ok.)
- Expand the following branches:
Local Computer Policy \ Computer Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Windows Components \ Windows Installer - Double-click Disable Windows Installer to your right, click Enabled, and choose Always from the list. Click Ok when you're done.
- The change will take effect immediately. If you added a snap in, as described above, you don't need to "save changes to the console."
- Note: If you encounter an error about the Administrator Policy the next time you try to install an application, you'll have to re-enable the Windows Installer temporarily.
Solution 3 (for Office 2000 only):
- Run the Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) from Windows.
- Expand the branches to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Office\ 9.0\ Common.
- Delete the UserData value on your right, and close the Registry Editor.
- The next time you start an Office application, it will ask for your username, but shouldn't bother you again.
To Fix “Black Screen on Resuming Hibernation” on Multiprocessor Computer Running on Windows Vista or Windows XP- KB951126
admin,A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft to fix this issue. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
Generally marked with the reference Blue Screen of Death(or BSOD), the stop errors causing the operating system to shut down, or restart the machine in order to prevent damage, and the critical system errors in Windows have reached a status of ubiquity and even managed to spawn derivations such as the Black Screen of Death.
Used in reference with the Reduced Functionality Mode introduced in Windows Vista as a direct result of the Windows Genuine Advantage mechanism detecting a non-genuine copy of the operating system, the Black Screen of Death is in fact a multifaceted labeled which can successfully be used for both Vista SP1 and XP SP3. According to Microsoft, both Vista and XP, updated with SP1 and SP3 respectively, are susceptible under the right configuration to enter into a coma and prevent any access from the end user.
“Consider the following scenario, you have a multiprocessor computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows XP, the computer has exactly 32 processors and you resume the computer from hibernation (S4),” Microsoft said. The Redmond company revealed that, in this case, either XP SP3 or Vista SP1 running on multiprocessor machines will stop respond and present the user with a black screen. The Black Screen of Death is displayed upon the resume from hibernation action. Such a process will successfully block Vista SP1 and XP SP3, the operating systems requiring a restart in order to regain functionality.
Windows Vista Can't Log In: "The system could not access the Credential Manager Server"
admin,Credential Manager is a new SSO solution that Microsoft offers in Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP and also in Windows Vista. It's based on a secure client-side credential-caching mechanism.Single sign-on (SSO) is an approach that attempts to reduce the time users spend performing logon tasks and the number of passwords users must remember. The Open Group, an international vendor and technology-neutral consortium dedicated to improving business efficiency, defines SSO as the "mechanism whereby a single action of user authentication and authorization can permit a user to access all computers and systems where that user has access permission, without the need to enter multiple passwords". The Windows 2000 (and earlier) requirement that users must reenter the same credentials whenever they access resources on the same Internet or intranet server can be frustrating for users, especially when they have more than one set of credentials. Administrators often must cope with the same frustration when they have to switch to alternative credentials to perform administrative tasks.
When you are trying to logon to Windows vista computer, you will get an error message says "The system can not access the Credential Manger Server" .Also when you are tried logging on to Windows Vista with the local admin account, but it tells that it is disabled, and tried again by disconnecting the Windows Vista computer from the network and then trying to logon, but get the error message, "The server is not responding properly. Verify that the Credential Manager server is properly installed on the target server."
HERE'S WHAT YOU DO TO RID YOURSELF OF THIS PROBLEM IN WINDOWS VISTA.(For HP laptop)
Login to Windows Vista as a local administrator in SAFE MODE by hit F[8] before the boot process starts .Then go to services and DISABLE everything that starts with HP.
Reboot the system. Hit F[10] while it's starting and disable the security settings (the second column halfway down). You'll have to configure a password to do it for some reason.
Anyway, then you should be able to login on the local admin in NON-SAFEMODE.
Then go Windows vista START- > HP PROTECTTOOL SECURITY MANAGER - >Credential Manager -> SETTINGS and DISABLE CREDENTIAL MANAGER. If you want disable the multifactor authentication (by enabling password only) under Credential Manager -> MULTIFACTOR AUTHENTICATION.
Missing Internet Explorer 6 in Windows Vista?
admin,Some people hate change and I've had more than one person write about how they don't like the new layout of Internet Explorer 7. So here are some quick tips how you can make it work more like the crappy old IE 6…
1) From the IE7 main menu at the top left under the search box, click "Tools" and then "Internet Options"
2) On the "General" tab, click the "Settings" button under "Tabs". Deselect "Enable Tabbed Browsing" and press "OK"
3) Close IE and start it up again.
4) Right click on the toolbar (where the icons are at the top of the window) and check "Menu Bar"
5) If you have other toolbars like, the Google toolbar and want to move them around, you'll need to unlock the Toolbars by right-clicking on them and deselecting "Lock the Toolbars". Then you can drag the toolbars and resize them as you wish.
* While you can customize the search box to make it use other providers, you cannot remove it.
* You'd probably prefer the menu bar on the top of the page, but it cannot be moved above the address bar.
* You can customize the icons and tools in the IE toolbar, but you cannot remove it entirely or add new commands that are not listed. Right-click and choose "Customize Command Bar" to see what options you have available.
So, that gets you closer to IE6 cosmetically, but I really feel that IE7 is a big move forward from IE6 and it is worth getting used to. Of course, if you hate change you won't be looking to move to FireFox, but I do recommend giving it a look!
Device Security via Group Policy in Windows Vista
admin,Windows Vista offers a new security capability in its ability to configure removable device controls through the use of Group Policy. It lets you control which devices can be installed on a system. In particular, there are many rightfully concerned that someone could plug in a removable disk drive and walking away with sensitive data.
To make use of this new capability, you create an approved list of devices on your network and include it in your GPO. It may be okay for users to install USB mice and keyboards, but not flash memory devices or external disk drives. MP3 players, PDAs and cell phones can also function as drives that can be used to store potentially large amounts of data. You must control their use through a properly-designed GPO.
The best documentation I've seen on this is:
Step-By-Step Guide to Controlling Device Installation and Usage with Group Policy
It offers specific instrucitons on how to...
Prevent installation of all devices
Prevent standard users from installing any device, but allow administrators to install or update devices. To complete this scenario, you configure two computer policies. The first computer policy prevents all users from installing devices, and the second policy exempts administrators from the restrictions.
Allow users to install only authorized devices
Allow users to install only the devices included on a list of authorized devices. This scenario builds on the first scenario and therefore you must complete the first scenario before attempting this scenario. To complete this scenario, you create a list of authorized devices so that users can install only those devices that you specify.
Prevent installation of only prohibited devices
Allow standard users to install most devices but prevent them from installing devices included on a list of prohibited devices. To complete this scenario, you must remove the policies that you created in the first two scenarios. After you have removed those policies, you create a list of prohibited devices so that users can install any device except those that you specify.
Control the use of removable media storage devices
Prevent standard users from writing data to removable storage devices, or devices with removable media, such as a USB memory drive or a CD or DVD burner. To complete this scenario, you configure a computer policy to allow read access, but deny write access to your sample device and to any CD or DVD burner device on your computer.
Folder Redirection in Windows Vista
admin,Folder redirection refers to the redirection of user folders such as Documents, Pictures, Start Menu and Desktop. While in Windows XP, only five folders could be redirected, Vista allows ten folders. Folder redirection is intended to replace the older concept of having a "home folder" for users. The problem with this (and most of us Admins still face this with users) is that there are too many applications that do not allow you to specify a default path for storing data files and users simply accept the default ending up with some files on the network, some in their [potentially roaming] profile and some on the local system.
Folder redirection supports two modes: Basic and Advanced. Basic redirection sends everyone’s folders to the same location and creates special subfolders for each user while advanced lets you to set folder redirection paths for specific groups.
You're probably aware this can be controlled via Group Policy in a corporate environment, but it is actually very easy to use at home as well. Backups are much easier when your data is separated from the local machine. If you don't have a server or network attached storage device at home, you could also redirect folders to a second (removable/USB) drive. It is actually as simple as moving the desired folder from where it is to where you want it to be! All references by the system will dynamically be updated to reference the new location.
Move or Cut and paste any of the following folders to take advantage of this feature for your computer at home.
WMI Control in Windows Vista
admin,WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) offers a ton of data about a Windows computer. It is a open database of information that Microsoft and others populate with virtually all details regarding your system. While management software can (and often does) take advantage of this data collection, it is also very easy to get at this information from scripts.
There are a number of WMI script generators out there including Microsoft’s Script-O-Matic and other copycat tools. One worth mentioning is provided as the “WMI Wizard” in the “Admin Script Editor” (www.adminscripteditor.com) tool. A couple of unique things it does includes generating script code in PowerShell, VBScript, KiXtart or AutoIt scripting languages and showing sample values for selected properties. The latter is important because while you may see something that looks like just what you want when browsing about, all too often the value is either unpopulated or unfriendly (unreadable that is). The feature is fully functional in the 45 day trial available for download.
You can control WMI from the WMI Control snap-in in the MMC.
1) Hit the “Start” button, type MMC and hit enter
2) If you have UAC enabled, you’ll have to answer the prompt that this is okay to run
3) Under file click “Add/Remove Snapin…” and then choose the WMI Control snapin at the bottom of the list provided.
4) You’ll be given the option to manage this on your local system or a remote one (I choose local)
5) Unlike many MMC snapins this is actually a separate dialog so all you get in the tree is a single node with no child nodes. Right click it and choose “Properties” to get at its settings.
The general tab shows you some basic information pulled from WMI regarding your system. Probably nothing you didn’t know here. The Backup/Restore tab lets you do as you’d expect. With the Security tab we finally get to something interesting. Here you can specify security on any level similar to how you would on most other items such as files and folders. Finally, there is an “Advanced” tab which has but one setting and that is to allow for you to specify the default namespace for purposes of scripting. This is set to root\cimv2 by default and is not something you would normally change as this is where most of the classes exist that pertains to your system. With this set, you need not specify the full path to the namespace when referencing a class as in the example below.
PowerShell:
foreach ($wmiColl in Get-WmiObject Win32_BIOS *){
Write-Output ("SerialNumber: " + $wmiColl.SerialNumber)
}
